How ShareTable Saved 10,000 Meals From Landfill
The real story behind ShareTable's impact: 10,000 meals redistributed, not wasted. How one app is changing food rescue in the Cayman Islands.

Last week, I got a call that made my entire year. It was from Sarah, who runs the Cayman Food Bank. She was calling to tell me that ShareTable had just hit a milestone: 10,000 meals redistributed instead of wasted.
Ten thousand meals. That's not just a number to me. That's 10,000 times someone didn't go hungry because we built an app that connected surplus food with people who needed it.
But here's the thing – this story isn't really about the app. It's about the people who use it, the restaurants that donate, the charities that distribute, and the families that benefit. ShareTable just made it easier for them to find each other.
The Problem We Started With
When I first started building ShareTable, I was thinking about my own restaurant experience. Every day, we'd throw away perfectly good food because we couldn't find anyone to take it. Meanwhile, I knew there were people in our community who could use that food.
The disconnect was frustrating. Restaurants had surplus food but no easy way to donate it. Charities needed food but didn't know where to find it. People were going hungry while good food was going to waste.
I thought, "There has to be a better way." So I built one.
The First Connection
The first successful connection happened three months after we launched. It was a small Italian restaurant in George Town that had 50 pounds of fresh pasta that was going to expire the next day.
The owner, Marco, posted it on ShareTable at 8 PM. By 9 PM, three different charities had claimed it. By 10 AM the next morning, that pasta was being served to families who needed it.
Marco called me that afternoon. "Willie," he said, "this is amazing. I've been trying to donate food for years, but I never knew how. Now it takes me 30 seconds to post something, and it's gone within hours."

The Ripple Effect
What started as a simple app to connect restaurants with charities has grown into something much bigger. Now we have grocery stores, bakeries, catering companies, and even individual families using ShareTable to share food with their neighbors.
The impact goes beyond just feeding people. Restaurants are saving money on waste disposal. Charities are getting better quality food. Families are building stronger community connections. And we're all doing our part to reduce food waste.
The Numbers Behind the Impact
Let me break down what 10,000 meals actually means:
- That's about 27 meals per day for a full year
- It represents roughly $50,000 worth of food that didn't go to waste
- It saved about 25,000 pounds of food from ending up in landfills
- It helped feed approximately 2,500 families (assuming 4 meals per family)
But the real impact isn't in the numbers. It's in the stories.
The Stories That Matter
Like the single mother who was able to feed her three kids for a week because a local bakery donated their day-old bread through ShareTable. Or the elderly couple who received fresh vegetables from a restaurant that had over-ordered for a cancelled event.
Or the restaurant owner who told me, "I used to feel guilty every time I threw away food. Now I feel good knowing it's going to someone who needs it."
These are the stories that make all the late nights and coding headaches worth it.
What's Next
Hitting 10,000 meals is just the beginning. We're working on new features that will make food sharing even easier:
- Real-time notifications when food is posted nearby
- Integration with delivery services for pickup coordination
- Nutritional information and dietary restriction filters
- Impact tracking so donors can see exactly where their food goes
We're also expanding beyond the Cayman Islands. There are restaurants and charities in other Caribbean countries who are interested in using ShareTable, and we're working on making that happen.
The Real Success
When I started building ShareTable, I thought I was solving a food waste problem. What I didn't realize is that I was actually building a community.
ShareTable isn't just an app – it's a way for people to help each other. It's a platform that makes it easy to do good. And that's something I'm really proud of.
So here's to the next 10,000 meals. And the 10,000 after that. Because every meal that doesn't go to waste is a small victory in the fight against hunger and food waste.
